Reimer Express Lines' Edward Janzen Named Canada's Driver of the Year [03/31/2003]
A 37-year veteran driver for Reimer Express Lines Ltd., Edward (Ed) Janzen, was named the "2002 CTA/Volvo Trucks Canada National Driver of the Year" at the annual safety luncheon held during the Manitoba Trucking Association's convention on March the 8th. In honour of his achievement, Ed received a $1,000 cash prize, a trip for two to any destination of his choice within Canada and a personal trophy, courtesy of Volvo Trucks Canada.
The award, sponsored by the Canadian Trucking Alliance and Volvo Trucks Canada, recognizes a Canadian transport driver who demonstrates a high-level of professionalism, both on and off the road. In selecting the recipient, special attention is given to the candidate who displays courtesy, and sometimes bravery, at roadside.
Ed travels one of the most treacherous stretches of the Trans-Canada Highway, between Winnipeg and Elie, Manitoba, on a regular basis and has assisted many motorists throughout the years. In the winter of 82', he found an elderly couple stranded on the highway and drove them to their home in Winnipeg. In the summer of 89', he helped free 2 people who were pinned under their vehicle at the site of a crash. And in the record-setting winter of 94/95', he came to the aid of a driver who had rolled his vehicle. These are just a few of the acts of kindness Ed Has demonstrated over the years.

Ed is also involved in safety and driver training at Reimer Express Lines in Winnipeg. He mentors new drivers and helps in their orientation and personal development. During his career as a professional driver, Ed has driven 2.6 million accident-free miles and has received numerous awards for his achievements - including a 35 year Service Award, a 32 year Safe Driving Award and a 2 million Mile Award from his company. In 2001, he was named the Manitoba Driver of the Month twice and was then awarded the title of Manitoba Driver of the Year.
In addition to transport driving, Ed has coached hockey, baseball, fastball and curling. He is also deeply involved in church activities and counsels the young people of his church. Ed, along with his wife, Anne, resides in Elie and has 3 adult children.
